Recipe: Spicy Gratinéed Mussels

Mejillones Gratinados


Ingredients for 4 people:

  • 1 kilo mussels
  • 2 tomatoes, peeled and without seeds
  • 1 small can fried tomato
  • olive oil
  • 1 clove garlic, chopped
  • 1 chilli pepper, chopped and without seeds
  • salt and pepper
  • 100 grams parmesan cheese, grated
  • fresh parsley
  1. Rinse mussels thoroughly with salted water and chop tomatoes. First of all, remove all open mussels which don’t close automatically when you give them a little tap with your fingers.
  2. Heat some olive oil in a frying pan and add garlic and chilli pepper. Fry them shortly. Add tomatoes and fried tomato, stir well and add salt and pepper. Bring sauce to the boil and slow cook for about 15 minutes until it gets thick.
  3. Put the mussels into a large pot and cover. Turn up the heat and shake the pan once in a while. After a few minutes you will see the mussels open. Remove the pot immediately from the heat.
  4. Remove mussels from shell. Throw away all mussels which are still closed, this means they are dead.
  5. Place a mussel in every shell, some tomato sauce, grated cheese and fresh parsley.
  6. Place shells on an oven fray and grill for about 1 minute.
